Match Types

“Tell me and l’lI forget. Show me, and I may not remember. Involve me, and I’ll understand” - Native American proverb

Through innovative, virtual experiential learning programs called “matches” (student consulting projects, 1-on-1 mentoring, webinars, and in-person company visits), true impact-leadership responsibilities, and rich interactions with role models, young women gain the resume, skills, and confidence to thrive in careers of their choice to narrow the STEM gap.

  • Student Consulting Projects

Scientella’s student consulting projects are a volunteer, real-world experiential learning opportunity to solve a stated challenge posed by a professional sponsor that relates to their company’s STEM field. The questions of interest typically center around a “Kids for Kids” mentality, in which participants gain empathy through exploration of the perspectives of other young student middle/high school peers. Working in small teams of less than 10 high school girls for 6-8 weeks, students create and present a Final Report based on primary and secondary research to answer questions of interest, assess current problems, propose solutions, and predict future implications.

Students are exposed first-hand to consulting, innovation, and research. They sample a specific STEM field and learn about the company hosting the project, all while building relevant hard and soft skills to assist their future academic and professional careers. The consulting project model fosters close collaboration and communication with a like-minded team of peers. Students can mention and reflect on the experience in resumes and college applications.

Corporate sponsors gain an impactful mechanism to give back to the next generation of women STEM innovators, while simultaneously gaining invaluable data and insights on their respective business or corporate social responsibility challenges.

  • Mentorships

Scientella’s unique 1-on-1 mentorships are designed to balance a minimum time commitment while achieving an enriching learning experience for both student and professional parties. In two, 45-60 minute virtual conference calls held a few weeks apart, participants engage in conversations about the mentor’s academic and career journey, the student’s academic journey and current thinking on career prospects, a Q&A, and valuable advice. These conversations are aided by separate mentor and mentee conversation guides that carefully outline the process, suggest questions, and remind participants of the proper follow-up required to achieve the desired time and value commitment.

Students receive an invaluable opportunity to interact first-hand with a STEM professional in their field of interest. They learn about their mentor’s journey, share their own thinking on college and career prospects, and receive enriching advice that promotes self-discovery and helps them navigate their future path. Students gain experience interacting in a professional manner with a superior, expand their networking skills, and are encouraged to maintain the relationship outside of Scientella at the conclusion of the mentorship.

Corporate mentors also gain from the two-way discussions by reflecting on themselves by imparting their wisdom and assisting in the inspiration of the next generation of their field.

  • Webinars

Scientella’s webinars are held by professionals and expose students to a variety of topics, which may include background info on the professional’s company, learning about a particular STEM field, and receiving professional skills such as resume building and interviewing tips.

Students are presented with a minimal time commitment opportunity to receive exposure to substantive STEM topics and learn about useful professional tools and skills.

Corporate sponsors gain a platform to expose their company's mission, increase recognition of their STEM field, and provide valuable insights and skills to younger generations.

  • In-Person Company Visits

Scientella’s in-person company visits have been a recent development as the world transitions out of the pandemic, offering an in-person interactive experience for students at a STEM company of interest to witness professional environments they wish to pursue first-hand.

Students receive an interactive experience at a STEM company of interest, allowing first-hand exposure to a professional environment and inspiring them to envision themselves in similar positions in their bright futures.

Corporate sponsors have the opportunity to interact with Scientella members face-to-face, thereby promoting personal connection as an avenue to further share their company’s offerings and share valuable career advice.
